WILLIAMS Canticum Novi Mundi MUSSORGSKY (arr. Yu) Pictures at an Exhibition
Elena Schwarz makes a welcome return to the TSO podium conducting this varied and colourful program. The cor anglais is heard to magnificent effect in Chris Williams’ brand new Canticum Novi Mundi, while the entire orchestra shines in Julian Yu’s unique arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
Johannes Fritzsch conductor Lorina Gore soprano Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra
MAHLER (arr. Simon) Symphony No 4
Mahler’s symphonies are renowned for their rising tension and booming melodies. Not his Fourth Symphony, which instead offers a rare glimpse of the innocence of childhood. Already lightly orchestrated, this nostalgic work is surprisingly adaptable to slightly reduced forces. The TSO performs an arrangement for chamber orchestra by Klaus Simon. Acclaimed soprano Lorina Gore joins the ensemble for the touching finale, ‘Life in Heaven’.
