The music written and chosen for this piece ranges across styles and genres. In a linear sense, it represents Jane Franklin’s developing sophistication as she grows up, but also as she grows in awareness of her society at large. Also very importantly, it represents development of her emotional awareness, particularly after her Tasmanian experience and later in her desperate searching for the missing John Franklin and his crew.

Thus, Jane’s early life is represented by a simple “ditty”(“Papa Says”), her travels are represented by music representative of an exotic world (“Journey on the Nile”), A traditional ballad is representative of John Franklin’s journey represents Jane’s grief at the loss of Sir John.
