The Tasmanian Ballet Company - The Sleeping Beauty
Saturday 28 July, 2012
“Our own Tasmanian Ballet company performs one of the most popular ballets in the world – a story of
enchantment and love”
The Sleeping Beauty was first performed in 1890. The premiere performance took place at the famous Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersberg. Commissioned by the Director of the Imperial Theatre in St Petersberg, Tchaikovsky completed the score in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky after Charles Perrault’s fairy tale La Belle au Bois Dormant. The choreographer of the original production was the famed Marius Petipa.
The work, with its well known story, has become one of the classical repertoire’s most famous ballets.
