Kiss Me Kate & Taming of the Shrew - Shakespeare Film Night
Wednesday, 11 August 2010
The Friends of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery fund-raising film nights Shakespeare Unreeled will finish off with a sparkling double bill, with the screening of Kiss Me Kate and Taming of The Shrew on Monday 16 August at 6pm.
Both films are based on Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew, which is set in Padua in the late 1500s. The local rich merchant Baptista has two daughters, the shy Bianca, who has many suitors and the older daughter Katharine who is out-spoken.
“The problem is that Bianca is not allowed to marry before Katharine, who it seems will remain unmarried on account of her personality.” explains Greg Leong Gallery Director.
Kiss Me Kate (1953) directed by George Sidney, is a musical, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. It is structured as a play within a play, where the interior play is a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew.
Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson perform in the roles as Fred Graham (Petruchio) and Lilli Vanessi (Katharine).
Taming of the Shrew (1967) directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The actors and partners, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton starred in the roles as Katharine and Petruchio her suitor. Taylor and Burton, who were known to have a stormy marriage in real life, must have felt at home in their portrayals of two strong willed characheters.
