Burnie Regional Art Gallery Media Release

The Friends of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery held their Annual General Meeting in the Gallery on Sunday, 8 August, 2010 at 1pm.

Rosie Wasson had been the President for the last 4 years and did not renominate. She said it had been an absolute pleasure and delight to support the Burnie Regional Art Gallery during this period and she thoroughly enjoyed her time as President.

Over the last year alone the Committee and members of Friends had organised 18 activities ranging from concerts to bus trips to Launceston to attend a ballet performance.

The new committee consists of Lyn Smith, President; Geoff McLean, Vice President; Noelene Hurkett, Secretary, replacing Friends stalwart and artist, Joan Kelly; Sonia Guizzo, Assistant Secretary; Trixie Duncan, Treasurer and Helena McLean as Public Officer.

Incoming President, Lyn Smith, originally from Hobart has lived in Burnie for 30 years. She has always been a great supporter of the arts and is looking forward to introducing initiatives for the Friends. Lyn is also a Committee member of the Burnie Arts Council and the Burnie Musical Society.

The aims of the Friends of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery are to support the Gallery by promoting and fostering community interest in the Gallery and to raise funds to assist the Gallery’s acquisitions and exhibitions program.

Some of the benefits of being a member are invitations to official openings, previews and other social occasions, discounted entry to some functions, 10% discount on items in the Gallery Shop and an opportunity to contribute your ideas and help create a vibrant regional Gallery.

Members of the Friends are also invited to attend Art Appreciation classes which are held each Monday afternoon. The Director, Greg Leong, takes these very informative and entertaining classes to train the members as ‘Gallery Guides’ where they learn to critique work in current exhibitions and give a talk on the work to groups etc visiting the gallery.

Membership forms to join the Friends are available at the gallery.
