Shakespeare Film Nights The Friends of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery are repeating their successful series of fund-raising film nights at the Gallery. The 2010 series Shakespeare Unreeled will start off with a private screening of The Capulets and the Montagues (Romeo & Juliet) an opera by Bellini on Monday 19 April at 6 pm.
The Shakespeare Unreeled series should please all lovers of good movies with some wonderful classics such as Bernstein’s musical West Side Story, which is also based on Romeo and Juliet:, Prospero’s Books by Peter Greenaway in his adaptation from the Tempest, and Verdi’s opera Falstaff, based on The Merry Wives of Windsor.
The series will conclude with a double bill. Both films are based on The Taming of the Shrew. First Cole Porter’s musical Kiss me Kate and then the unforgettable Zeffirelli version of the same play with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the title roles.
Bellini composed The Capulets and the Montagues in 1830, and featured two female voices in the roles of Romeo and Juliet. This performance at the 2005 Martina Franca Festival featured singers Federico Sacchi, Patrizia Ciofi, Danilo Formaggi and Nicola Amodio. Denis Krief conducted the orchestra Internazionale d'Italia.
