Burnie Regional Art Gallery Media Release

Digitized Gallery Director, Greg Leong, will be opening the exhibition Digitized by local emerging artist, Michael Cannon at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery on Friday 16 April at 6.30 pm.

The Burnie Regional Art Gallery has again responded to the annual invitation from the National Trust of Australia, Tasmania, to be a part of their Heritage Festival.

The theme for the 2010 Festival is, “Deco to Digital – Our 20th Century Heritage”. In response to this theme, Michael Cannon presents his first professional solo exhibition, with a suite of digital images depicting Tasmanian places, events and organisations given recent status as Tasmanian Icons by the National Trust.

“His suite of digital images incorporating a blend of manual and digital art certainly presents the theme in a new light, stripping them of the glamour of the tourism brochure,” says Gallery Director, Greg Leong.

“I have been producing work at the crossroads of photography, painting, drawing and digital art since 1998.” says Michael and adds “Part of my drive is to see digital art as a whole accepted as an art form in its own right.”

Digitized will open up in conjunction of two other exhibitions: Returning – Contemporary textiles and West of Burnie by local watercolour artist Jan Suter.

Exhibition dates: Saturday 17 April – Sunday 30 May 2010

Michael can make himself available for photo and interview upon request. Please contact the Gallery.
