Burnie Regional Art Gallery Media Release

There are plenty of reasons to celebrate at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre and Burnie Regional Art Gallery on Friday, April 9.

Not only is Burnie Arts starting off its 2010 first subscription season with a lively cabaret, it is embracing pre-cup fever, and none is more excited than Director Greg Leong.

Mr Leong said the night would start with the Burnie Cup Cocktail Party at 6.30pm in the Gallery, to officially open a special exhibition of the 1888 Melbourne Cup.

“The Gallery is very fortunate to have the 1888 Melbourne Cup on display to coincide with this year’s Burnie Harness Racing Cup, which is held the following day,” Mr Leong said.

“All those who attend the pre-cup cocktail party are encouraged to wear a cup hat with the most eye-catching creation to win a prize. The event is also a fundraiser for Friends of the Gallery.”

Mr Leong said the exhibition would be officially opened by Burnie Racing Harness Club President Bryan Green, who is also a Member for Braddon.

Following the cocktail party, Mr Leong said guests could move onto the cabaret concert in the Town Hall and be entertained by Coastal band Nine Lives and their Rock N’ Soul Revue at 8pm.

“Nine Lives has been the headline act for major functions in the North West of Tasmania for over nine years,” Mr Leong said.

“Some of these functions include A Night on the Terrace, Mayor’s Masquerade Ball in Burnie, Devonport Dance Fiesta and Devonport Jazz Festival and also Taste of the Harvest, where they backed rock star Diesel.”

“Nine Lives’ repertoire encompasses rock, soul and a tantalising soupcon of funk for corporate events, birthdays and weddings.

Mr Leong said patrons could take advantage of a special package deal for both the Cocktail Party and Rock N’ Soul Revue for $30 with a hat, or $35 without a hat.

“This is a great opportunity for patrons to attend two functions on the same night and enjoy a bargain package deal,” Mr Leong said.

Bookings for the events are essential and should be made by calling Burnie Arts & Function Centre by emailing arts@burnie.net or calling 6431 4114.
