The Original 1888 Melbourne Cup
Bryan Green, President of the Burnie Harness Racing Club will be opening a very special exhibition of the 1888 Melbourne Cup at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery on Friday 9 April at 6.30 pm.
The coveted 1888 Melbourne Cup was gifted to the National Gallery of Australia by Elaine and Jim Wolfensohn. This generous gift has enabled people from all over Australia to view the treasured Cup.
The opening is in fact a fund-raising Cup Cocktail Party, courtesy of the Friends of the Gallery, with a soiree performance by soprano Susan McArthur.
‘Come and enjoy some sparkling and still wines”, Gallery Director Greg Leong said with a sparkle in his glass and added” For this evening we have a dress code: Fabulous hats, gents included, and we will be giving out a door prize for Best Hat. In fact there will be a $5 forfeit for the hatless…”
The evening can then be rounded of by going upstairs to the Burnie Arts and Function Centre, where the award-winning group Nine Lives will perform a Rock ‘N’ Soul Revue at 8pm.
Booking for this eve of the Burnie Cup Cocktail Party is essential and should be made by calling the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Box Office (P.64305850) by 7 April. Cost: $15 per person wearing a hat or $20 for those without a hat.
The Burnie Arts and Function Centre and Gallery are offering a package deal to enjoy both Party and Revue. Cost for both events: $30 with hat or $ 35 without.
Melbourne Cup is on display in the Gallery from Saturday 10 April – Sunday 9 May.
