Burnie Regional Art Gallery Media Release

Celebrating David Turner’s inclusion in the amazing My Favourite Australian exhibition, the Burnie Concert Band will perform a special concert on Sunday 14 March at 2pm in the Burnie Regional Art Gallery.

In early 2008, the ABC with the National Portrait Gallery called upon all Australians to vote for both their Most Popular Australian as well as nominating their favourite Unsung Australian Hero to feature in a video installation.

‘My Favourite Australian highlights Australia’s interest in the hugely diverse range of people who have contributed to shaping our society - from local heroes to heads of state”, said Andrew Sayers, Director of the National Portrait Gallery.

“The exhibition which has been showing to the public since last week has already proven highly popular with visitors to the gallery” added gallery director Greg Leong.

Encompassing thirty portraits from noted Australian video artists and filmmakers, this exhibition includes portraits of household names such as Olivia Newton-John, Peter Cundall and Fred Hollows, plus inspiring unsung heroes including Pam Ahern, David Bungal Mowaljarlai and Musical Director of the Burnie Concert Band, David Turner.

My Favourite Australian is a major collaboration between the National Portrait Gallery and ABC TV. The project has also been supported by the Australia Council for the Arts and the Nelson Meers Foundation.

The exhibition will be officially opened by Rosie Wasson, President of Friends of the Gallery on Sunday 14 March 2010 at 1.45pm, followed by a concert by a section of the Burnie Concert Band.

Exhibition dates Monday 1 March- 11 April 2010
