A true blue cabaret comes to Burnie
Wednesday, 1 February 2012
A dinky di Australian performance is on its way to Burnie.
Cooee Cabaret is an original family cabaret show that weaves together iconic Australian songs and sound recordings, drawn from the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry. This free performance can be seen on Wednesday 8 February at 7:30pm in the Theatre at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre.
Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “The performance will include recordings of the Vegemite and Aeroplane Jelly jingles, country larrikins Dad and Dave, Slim Dusty’s Pub With No Beer, Dorothea Mackellar’s ode to outback Australia My Country, The Road to Gundagai and Waltzing Matilda, and pop classics I Am Woman, I Should Be So Lucky, Down Under and the Indigenous protest song Treaty.
“I already have the tunes going around in my head just thinking about the performance!”
Cooee Cabaret has been created by contemporary Musical Director and cabaret performer Nigel Ubrihien.
Director of the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Greg Leong said, “This performance will delight both young and old. It is a fun and original show that takes the audience on a journey through Australia’s most iconic songs and sounds.
“Cooee Cabaret is currently touring Tasmania. At each performance, local artists have been given the opportunity to perform as part of the cabaret. For the Burnie performance violinist Maria Perez-Pulido and singer songwriter Michael Cannon will be the special guest performers.
“Although we don’t want to giveaway exactly what Maria and Michael will be contributing to the performance, I know that they will certainly make Burnie very proud of their contribution,” Mr Leong said.
Maria trained as a classical violinist and played with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canary. She then went on to become a luthier, a skill she learnt in Italy before immigrating to Australia. When she is not working on her own music she is studying towards a PhD investigating the sound qualities of Tasmanian timbers.
Michael Cannon is a burnie based multi talented graphic designer. Music has been a passion since his youth. He regularly performs as part of the BRAG Boys male musical group formed to perform in the Burnie Regional Art Gallery. Michael is a very talented songwriter.
