World music star brings tropical island rhythms to Burnie!

Wednesday, 15 October 2014

World music star, Grace Barbé from the Seychelles, is performing at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre this Saturday, 18 October 2014 at 8pm.

Grace’s soulful music reflects and celebrates the diverse cultural influences of her Indian Ocean heritage. A colourful and energetic fusion of tropical island rhythms with African percussion, reggae, pop, rock and latin flavours, Grace’s “Afro-Kreol” sound is original, fresh and funky.

Deputy Mayor, Sandra French said, “Her voice is remarkably powerful, and as a songwriter she has a rare and natural gift for rhythm and melody. Grace is incredibly talented and plays guitar and bass and sings in three languages; English, Kreol and French.

“I heard a sneak peak of her show on the radio the other day, and know we are in for a real cultural treat.”

Director of the Burnie Arts & Function Centre, Geoff Dobson said, “Grace lights up the stage with a vibrant and engaging presence that compels the audience to get up and dance. Grace and her band have won the World Music Act of the Year, West Australian Music Industry Association in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012; and was a Musicoz 2012 finalist.”

During her visit, Grace Barbé and her band members will hold a special sold out cooking demonstration, highlighting how to cook traditional Kreol food from the Seychelles.

“Kreol cuisine is a colourful and spicy mix of influences from India, Asia, Africa, Madagascar, Europe and Arabia. Grace will discuss the cuisine, culture and history of the Kreol people, and may even teach the audience to sing a traditional sega!

“The cooking class is already booked out.  I am sure there will be some many trialing new flavors in their kitchen this weekend,” Mr Dobson said.

This special demonstration is supported by the arts UNEARTHED program. The arts UNEARTHED program, in partnership with MMG is a program that provides access to quality arts experiences for the community through audience development activities, workshops and opportunities to exhibit and perform.
