Tasmania's premier ensemble back in Burnie!

Tuesday, 27 August 2013

Following Virtuosi Tasmania’s successful concerts in 2011 and 2012, the ensemble returns to the Burnie Regional Art Gallery on Sunday 15 September 2013 at 2pm.

Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “We are thrilled to have Virtuosi Tasmania, Tasmania's premier ensemble for bringing chamber music to regional Tasmania back to Burnie in 2013 to share this exciting program.

“This style of performance in the Burnie Regional Art Gallery is always mesmerising. The Virtuosi ensemble presents chamber music with such passion, presenting a range of dynamics and expression, making this performance a must see for all lovers of music.”

Virtuosi will be performing a program featuring work considered the best in their repertoire, including, Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet No 4 in D major ‘Fandango’.

Burnie Arts & Function Centre Performing Arts Coordinator, Sarah Reynolds said, “There is currently a revival of interest in chamber music written by Boccherini. An Italian by birth, he spent most of his career employed by the Spanish Court. The Spanish influence can be heard throughout his music especially in the Guitar Quintet No 4 in D major which is popularly known as Fandango.”

Another highlight of the upcoming concert will be the performance of Schubert’s String Quartet No 14 in D minor ‘Death and the Maiden’.

“Death and the Maiden is Schubert's testament to death, written in 1824 after a severe decline in his health. Not published until three years after his death, it is now celebrated as one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire,” Miss Reynolds said.

Performers:  Elinor Levy, Rohana Brown, violins, Doug Coghill, viola, Jane Tallon, cello, Owen Thompson, Guitar.
