Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra brings Mozart focused program to Burnie

Monday, 27 October 2014

The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra is returning to the Burnie Arts & Function Centre on Thursday 6 November 2014 at 7.30pm to delight with the music of Mozart and music inspired by Mozart forming the basis of this concert.

The program includes Mozart’s Symphony No 1 and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. Sue-Ellen Paulsen, TSO Principal Cello, performs the solo part in Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a tender and heartfelt tribute to music of the 18th century and to Mozart in particular.

But it’s not all mellow cello – the Tchaikovsky Variations call for dazzling pyrotechnics too! Marko Letonja, TSO Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, conducts this enthralling concert.

Burnie Arts & Function Centre’s Director, Geoff Dobson said, “We are so glad that the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra is returning to Burnie in 2014 with this new and exciting program.

“It is understandable how the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has been at the forefront of concert life in Tasmania for more than six decades. Their concerts always delight. In recent years the symphony has performed at City Recital Hall Angel Place in Sydney, Melbourne Recital Centre and the Adelaide Festival as well as internationally in North and South America, Greece, Israel, South Korea, China, Indonesia and Japan.”

Marko Letonja studied at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana and the Vienna Academy of Music. He was Music Director of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra from 1991 to 2003 and Music Director and Chief Conductor of both the Symphony Orchestra and the Opera in Basel from 2003 to 2006. He was Principal Guest Conductor of Orchestra Victoria in 2008 and made his debut with the TSO in 2009. He is also the Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.

Sue-Ellen Paulsen studied at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music where she had lessons with Richard Dedecius. In 1980 she won the ABC Concerto Competition and was awarded a scholarship enabling her to pursue postgraduate study in Vienna with André Navarra. She assumed her current position with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 1986.
