Tasmanian Ballet Company returns to Burnie

Monday, 23 July 2012

The Tasmanian Ballet Company will perform Sleeping Beauty at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre this Saturday 28 July 2012 for two performances.

Deputy Mayor Sandra French said, “Sleeping Beauty is one of the most popular ballets in the world. It’s a story of enchantment and love.

“Sleeping Beauty is the third instalment of the Tchaikovsky’s trio of ballets performed by the Tasmanian Ballet Company. The Nutcracker (2010) and Swan Lake (2011) toured Burnie in the last two years and were both sell outs.”

The Tasmanian Ballet Company, formed in 1961, was disbanded in 1981 and reformed in 2002 by artistic director Mark Reddish.

Director of the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Greg Leong said, “The Burnie audience has again the opportunity to experience Tasmania’s only professional ballet company. We are very appreciative that the Tasmanian Ballet Company has returned to Burnie three years in a row now. It’s fabulous they are providing the community two opportunities to see this professional and elegant performance.

“Tickets are selling very fast for both performances, which is great to see. We hope that we can give the Tasmanian Ballet Company another sell out, giving them full houses three years in a row.”

The focus of the performance lies on the two main conflicting forces of good (the Lilac Fairy) and evil (Carabosse); each represented by a theme which runs throughout the entire ballet, serving as an important thread to the underlying plot. Act III of the work, however, takes a complete break from the two motifs and instead places focus on the individual characters of the various court dances.

Sleeping Beauty is a four act ballet and will be performed in the Theatre at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre on 28 July 2012 at 2pm and 7:30pm.
