Monday, 23 February 2015

A tale as old as time will be presented at the Burnie Arts & Function Centre, when the Burnie Musical Society presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast for a ten show season, opening on Friday 27 February at 7.30pm and closing on Saturday 14 March.

The Disney musical, Beauty and the Beast ran for over 5,400 performances on Broadway between 1994 and 2007. The Burnie Musical Society’s production of Beauty and the Beast is directed by Noel Browne, with Thomas Lamb as Musical Director, Del Polden as Vocal Coach and choreography by Mandy Dodd.

Mayor Anita Dow said, “The Burnie Musical Society continues to deliver wonderful musical theatre productions that provide performing opportunities for local people to express themselves.”

Beauty and the Beast is the story of a selfish Prince who is turned into a hideous Beast after refusing an old beggar woman shelter in his castle. The old woman tells the Beast that the spell will be broken only if he learns to love someone, and earn her love. Beautiful young Belle yearns for adventure outside her village. Her father becomes lost, and seeks shelter in the castle. The Beast takes him captive. Belle must give up her freedom to save his life.

Director of the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Geoff Dobson said, “I am sure many people are familiar with the story and the famous songs in Beauty and the Beast. This enchanting Disney musical has enthralled Broadway audiences with wonderful songs by Alan Menken, Tim Rice and the late Howard Ashman.

“We are thrilled to be able support the Burnie Musical Society’s next production, after their very successful seasons of Oklahoma! and Les Miserables.
