Monday, 13 January 2014

The Burnie Arts & Function Centre’s subscription season is nearly upon us! With a season jam-packed with bold and exciting theatrical experiences, there is something to entice everyone.

The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? – Friday 14 February & Saturday 15 February

Produced in conjunction with CentrStage, Edward Albee’s The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? is a grand parody of the classic mid-life crisis in an upper middle class society; a most absurd but at the same time heart wrenchingly real account of family trauma and above all, love.

The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? tells the story of Martin who is a hugely successful architect. He is happily married to Stevie and has a nineteen year old son, Billy. Martin has just turned forty-five, won a very prestigious architectural prize and been selected to design ‘The World City’. He is having quite the week. This all changes suddenly when he admits to his best friend Ross that he is having an affair with Sylvia. Sylvia is a goat.

Edward Albee’s play has won the Drama Desk Award for Best New Play 2002, Tony Award for Best Play 2002, Pulitzer Prize for Drama 2003 and Helpmann Award for Best Play 2006.

CentrStage will also be conducting acting and vocal workshops on Friday 14 February at 2pm and Saturday 15 February at 10am. Limited spaces, bookings are essential. To book or for further information please call the box office on 6430 5850.

Lior – Saturday 1 March

Lior is known for his dynamic and moving performances, and has earned a reputation as one of Australia’s finest live performers. This is a chance to hear this acclaimed vocalist in a manner harking back to archetypal ‘salon’ concerts; where both audience and performer share an evening enjoying the connection that only proximity can offer.

BLITZ – Thursday 6 March

A hilarious and heart-warming musical filled with the glorious melodies of the ‘30s and ‘40s. Featuring the multi-talented Claire Dawson, a lead performer on London’s West End stages. This show evokes a time when laughter and tears were only a breath apart.
