A local touch to The Marriage of Figaro

Tuesday, 09 August 2016

On Tuesday 30 August, Opera Australia will bring a never seen before production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro to the Burnie Arts & Function Centre Theatre, as part of its 2016 regional tour of Australia.

Mozart’s classic comedy has been entertaining audiences for centuries, and while this version of the much-loved opera will retain the music and the storyline of Mozart’s original, it will however be performed in English with a Chamber Orchestra.

Burnie City Council Mayor Anita Dow said, “We are very fortunate that this unique version of The Marriage of Figaro, which is performed by Australia’s foremost opera company, Opera Australia, will be coming to Burnie.”

“We are also proud to support Olivia Cranwell, who is semi-based in Burnie. Olivia plays the Countess in the regional tour.”

The cast of The Marriage of Figaro is impressive, with multiple principal artists from Opera Australia, plus a live Chamber Orchestra.

This new The Marriage of Figaro will not only entertain families along the North West Coast, it will also provide the opportunity for some of our younger residents to take the stage. Opera Australia is continuing its community engagement program, which provides hundreds of children the opportunity to be trained and perform through the Regional Children’s Chorus program.

Local choir leader Lana Stokes said, “Our region is very proud of the 24 local children in the Regional Children’s Choir, who have been busy learning the songs and rehearsing over the last couple of months. They are very excited to be part of this professional production, and can’t wait to wear the period costumes.”

This version of the hilarious account of one household’s adventures over a single day of madness, accompanied by fantastic music by Mozart, incredible singing, and stunning period costumes and set design is a performance not to be missed.
